When you create an account, we collect your name and email address as provided through our OAuth authentication provider. We do not store passwords directly.

2.2 Reading Activity Data

To power your dashboard and progress tracking, we collect:

• Reading sessions — document title, words read, reading speed (WPM), duration, and timestamps
• Quiz results — scores, difficulty level, and completion time
• Daily goals and streak data
• Document metadata — title, word count, upload date (not document content)

2.3 Document Content (Cloud Backup)

By default, your PDF documents are stored locally in your browser only and never transmitted to our servers. If you explicitly enable cloud backup, the extracted text content of your documents is encrypted and stored in secure cloud storage (Amazon S3) accessible only to your account.

2.4 Technical Data

We automatically collect standard technical data including your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, and pages visited. This data is used for security, analytics, and service improvement.

2.5 Cookies and Local Storage

We use essential session cookies to keep you logged in and browser local storage to save your documents and reading positions. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

3. Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect, sell, or share:

• The content of your PDF documents (unless cloud backup is explicitly enabled)
• Payment or financial information
• Sensitive personal data (health, biometric, or government IDs)
• Data from third-party advertising networks

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Provide, maintain, and improve the Speed Reads service
• Display your reading statistics, progress, and achievements
• Generate AI-powered quizzes and summaries from your documents (server-side only)
• Send you optional notifications about milestones and goals
• Respond to support requests and inquiries
• Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents
• Comply with legal obligations

We do not use your data to train AI models or sell it to third parties for any purpose.

5. AI-Powered Features

Speed Reads uses a built-in large language model (LLM) to generate quiz questions and document summaries. When you trigger these features, the relevant document text is sent to our server-side AI service for processing. This text is used solely to generate the requested output and is not stored, logged, or used to train any AI model.

6. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data only in these limited circumstances:

• Service providers: Infrastructure partners (cloud hosting, database) who process data on our behalf under strict confidentiality agreements
• Legal requirements: If required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of Speed Reads and its users
• Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred with prior notice

7. Data Retention

We retain your account data and reading history for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.

Documents stored locally in your browser are controlled entirely by you and can be deleted at any time by clearing your browser data or using the delete function within the app.

8. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including HTTPS encryption in transit, encrypted storage for cloud-backed documents, JWT-based session authentication, and regular security reviews. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
